Solingen, Etel 2018 William and Katherine Estes Award

Etel Solingen, University of California, Irvine, received the 2018 William and Katherine Estes Award.

For more than two decades, Solingen has focused on the risks of nuclear proliferation and the domestic incentives of states for seeking nuclear weapons. Her research has also advanced our understanding of how policymakers can design effective policies to limit the risk of nuclear war.

Starting with two important articles in 1994, Solingen stood out as a pioneer in the theoretical understanding of why some states acquired nuclear weapons while others renounced them since the inception of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the “Second Nuclear Age.” Her many additional publications include the award-winning 2007 book "Nuclear Logics: Contrasting Paths in East Asia and the Middle East", the first systematic analysis in contemporary international relations connecting political economy, globalization, and nuclear choices.

Solingen’s work remains on the major reading lists worldwide regarding efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation. An improved understanding of the relationship between openness to the global economy on the one hand, and nuclear restraint on the other, is especially vital today and can help ensure a safer future.

The William and Katherine Estes Award recognizes basic research in any field of cognitive or behavioral science that uses rigorous formal and empirical methods to advance our understanding of issues relating to the risk of nuclear war. The award is presented with a $20,000 prize.
