Biosketch
Since 1958 when starting graduate school at Northwestern University, my interests have encompassed cell biology, and photosynthesis. One of the major emphases has been the discovery and description of phycobilisomes in red algae and cyanobacteria, while also establishing that in cryptophyte algae the phycobiliproteins existed in the intra-thylakoidal lumen. Attendant studies also included the role of carotenoids in photosynthesis. The research activities were also coupled with significant service to plant biology as advisor and officer of multiple societies, including being elected as the first female president of the American Society of Plant Biology. Even now, I still participate in reviewing and editing scientific contributions, including those for PNAS.

Exploring the effects of salinity changes on the longevity of several cryptophyte algae.
