James Hall was one of North America’s preeminent paleontologists and geologists of the nineteenth century. His work includes a thirteen-volume paleontological history of New York, descriptions of many fossils, and contributions to the understanding of stratigraphy. He was a founder and president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a charter member of the National Academy of Sciences, and the first president of the Geological Society of America (1889).
