Roger Beachy’s love of nature and science grew from his agricultural roots and was amplified by a motivated high school science teacher. At tiny Goshen College, he flourished in a strong research-oriented biology department, where he became aware of the expanded possibilities offered by the recombinant DNA revolution of the 1970’s. Beachy is known internationally for his work in molecular virology, gene expression, and biotechnology, and in particular for his development of transgenic plants that are resistant to viral infection. He became the first director of the National Institutes of Food and Agriculture in October, 2009, and was named Chief Scientist at the United States Department of Agriculture in January 2010.
