Lawrence D. Bobo is the W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard University. Inspired by an undergraduate class at Loyola Marymount University, Bobo set his sights on a career in Sociology, obtaining a PhD from the University of Michigan in 1984. Before moving to Stanford, Dr. Bobo taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, The University of Callifornia at Los Angeles, and at Stanford University where he was Director of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity.
Bobo has made central contributions to both the understanding of racial attitudes and relations in the United States, and to survey research methodology through his studies of the causes and consequences of racial and ethnic attitudes.
Bobo is co-author of "Racial Attitudes in America: Trends and Interpretations", and "Prejudice in Politics: Group Position, Public Opinion, and the Wisconsin Treaty Rights Dispute". He is co-editor for "Racialized Politics: The Debate on Racism in America" and "Urban Inequality: Evidence from Four Cities". An elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Bobo has been a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, a Visiting Scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation, and a Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society Visiting Scholar. Dr. Bobo was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2004.
