As a kid growing up in post-WWII Queens, H. Russell Bernard dreamed of traveling the world and seeing the wonders he read about in books. So as soon as he could, he left home to explore—and found his calling in foreign languages and cultures.
As a cultural anthropologist, Bernard has studied communities in Greece, Mexico and the United States, trying to find out why languages die and how our social networks work. Most recently, he has partnered with physicists and mathematicians to refine the methods anthropologists use to analyze the world.
H. Russell Bernard is a Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Florida. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2010.
